As we wrap up another incredible year, I want to take a moment to say a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you. Your support, engagement, and encouragement mean the absolute world to me. Whether you’ve watched my YouTube videos, shared a post, left a comment, or simply cheered me on from afar — I see you, and I’m so grateful for you.🎄
It’s been a year of growth, reflection, and change, and I’m so glad we’ve been able to share this journey together. And as we approach Christmas Day, I’m here with a little gift of perspective. Let’s talk about something that’s been on my mind for a while now: New Year’s resolutions.
Why I Gave Up on New Year's Resolutions
For over a decade, I’ve completely abandoned the idea of New Year’s resolutions — and honestly, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. Like many of you, I used to set grand goals every January 1st. I’d promise myself that I’d eat healthier, exercise more, save more money, and transform my life overnight.
But here’s the truth: it never worked. By mid-February (sometimes even sooner), my resolutions were either forgotten or abandoned. Sound familiar?
I’m not alone in this. The whole concept of New Year’s resolutions is flawed. It encourages us to wait for a specific date to start making changes in our lives. We tell ourselves, “I’ll start on January 1st,” but why wait when you can start today?
Why Waiting for January 1st is a Form of Procrastination
I’m a firm believer that waiting for the “perfect time” is just procrastination in disguise. It’s an excuse we tell ourselves to delay the hard work. We’re essentially giving Future Us the responsibility to make everything better — but Future Us is still just Us. Nothing changes unless we change.
January is also a tough month. It’s cold, it’s dark, and we’re fresh from the indulgence of Christmas. Expecting ourselves to suddenly become super-disciplined and focused is a recipe for disappointment. No wonder so many people give up on their goals before February even arrives.
What I Do Instead
Instead of waiting for January 1st, I’ve made it a habit to act in the moment. If I feel a change needs to be made, I start straight away. No fancy dates. No “Monday Motivation”. Just action.
Here’s my approach:
Identify the goal.
Break it down into small, manageable, and most importantly, sustainable steps.
Take immediate action, even if it’s just a tiny first step.
Back in 2011, I decided I wanted to get a grip on my finances. I didn’t wait for January 1st to get started. I took a day off work, grabbed a few books, watched YouTube videos, and had honest conversations with financial experts. That one day of action sparked a journey that’s continued for over a decade. Imagine if I’d waited until January to start — I’d have lost months of progress.
Take Action Today (Not Tomorrow)
I’m sharing this with you because I know how tempting it is to say, “I’ll start in the New Year.” But here’s a challenge for you: what if you started today? You don’t have to do something huge. You don’t have to make a grand declaration to the world. Just take one small step. If you’ve been thinking about getting fitter, take a 15-minute walk today. If you’ve been wanting to save more money, open a savings account online right now. Small steps count.
The beauty of starting now is that, by the time January 1st comes around, you’ll already be ahead. While everyone else is writing lists of resolutions, you’ll be well on your way to achieving real, sustainable progress.
