Back in Manchester, I embarked on a new chapter as a marketing consultant. This transition was more than just a change of job; it was a return to my roots and an opportunity to redefine my career on my own terms. Collaborating with eight other Black business owners, I co-founded The Black United Representation Network (BURN). BURN is an organisation focused on the social and economic empowerment of the Black community in the North of England. Serving as the Managing Director for a year and remaining on their board of directors, I was deeply involved in initiatives that aimed to uplift and empower the community.

After my time with BURN, I took on the role of Director of Marketing & Inclusion for an award-winning training provider. This role allowed me to combine my passion for marketing with my commitment to inclusion and diversity. However, after 14 months, I realised that I no longer wanted to be an employee. A week before my 45th birthday, I made the bold decision to resign. It was a scary step, but I knew it was the right one for me.

Top Tips to Get Started

Here are some essential tips to help you successfully rent out your wardrobe:

  1. Assess Your Wardrobe: Identify items in good condition that you rarely wear. Ensure they are clean, well-maintained, and free of any damage.

  2. High-Quality Photos: Take clear, well-lit photos of your items from multiple angles. This helps potential renters see the details and quality of your clothing.

  3. Detailed Descriptions: Write thorough descriptions, including brand, size, fit, material, and any unique features. Be honest about the condition to avoid disputes.

  4. Set Competitive Prices: Research similar items on the platform to determine a fair rental price. Consider the original cost, condition, and demand.

  5. Rental Platform Policies: Ensure that you read and understand all rental terms and conditions, including duration, shipping methods, return conditions, damage liability, and late fees. This sets expectations and protects all parties.

  6. Stay Responsive: Promptly respond to rental inquiries and requests. Good communication builds trust and encourages repeat business.

  7. Leverage Social Media: Promote your rental listings on social media to reach a broader audience. Use hashtags and engage with potential renters to increase visibility.

  8. Maintain Your Items: Regularly check and clean your rented items. Address any wear and tear promptly to keep them in top condition.

Legal Considerations

Before diving into the rental business, be aware of the legal aspects:

  1. Insurance: Consider insuring valuable items to protect against loss, theft, or damage. Some platforms offer insurance, but it's wise to have additional coverage.

  2. Taxes: Rental income is taxable, so keep accurate records of your earnings and expenses. Consult a tax professional to ensure compliance with local tax laws.

  3. Terms & Conditions: Read the terms and conditions on the fashion rental platforms as a means of protecting your interests. Take into consideration that renters will not have necessarily have familiarised themselves with the terms and conditions, so it's important that you know the rental rules.

The Environmental Impact

Renting out your wardrobe contributes to a more sustainable fashion industry. By extending the life of your clothes, you reduce the demand for new items and minimise textile waste. This eco-friendly approach supports a circular economy, benefiting both people and the planet.
